The Benefits of Remote Monitoring
While still considered a relatively new entry into the Legionella compliance market, automated monitoring systems, like our L8 Remote, have the potential to offer more than just basic compliance.
What is L8 Remote?
In 2019 we launched a product that looked to improve a core water safety task – monthly temperature monitoring. Checking temperatures is an important aspect of Legionella control because it confirms the effectiveness of existing control measures. This process of manually taking temperatures is prone to inaccuracies or being missed altogether. L8 Remote automates this process, ensuring tasks are not only carried out effectively but also providing additional benefits.
– Easier Compliance
Let’s start with the main benefit of remote monitoring – automation. The traditional method of taking temperatures involves using a temperature probe and manually taking readings. Unfortunately, this approach leaves room for error, with temperatures being recorded incorrectly or missed completely.
While gaps in compliance records are a cause for concern, inaccurate records have the potential to be far more dangerous. If a system is left in these conditions, the bacteria can proliferate and put people at risk.
Remote devices alleviate this by taking routine temperatures automatically, but with 1°C of accuracy.

– Going Beyond Compliance
While remote monitoring devices are primarily used to take temperatures on a monthly basis, L8 Remote takes temperatures every hour. This functionality allows you to resolve nonconformities sooner and take steps to bring your system back in line.
The system also provides weekly alerts for temperatures that are continually out of range. So you will only be notified of situations that require action to put right.
– Up to 5 years of coverage
L8 Remote has been designed with convenience in mind, so each unit has an average battery life of up to 5 years.
Five years of coverage equates to an average of 32.5 hours of time that you can now utilise in more productive efforts. Once the time is up, it’s as simple as replacing the unit and continuing to enjoy the remote monitoring service.
– Impact on the Environment
A natural part of using contractors for routine services is a higher supply chain carbon footprint. Although there is still an impact with using a battery-powered device, the overall impact is considerable ower when compared to vehicle emissions.
In swapping our own clients over to remote monitoring, we’re projected to reduce our vehicle emissions by 5 cubic tonnes a year. Whether directly or indirectly, by choosing a solution like L8 Remote, you’ll have a more positive impact on the environment.
