In the latest edition of ‘Meet the Team’ we speak to Nant’s newest recruit, Graduate Software Engineer Amrit Bains.
Amrit will be responsible for delivering Nant’s mission of achieving ‘customer excellence through technology’, ensuring existing systems are maintained whilst new, forward-thinking programmes are developed to meet growing needs.
Tell us about yourself?
I’m originally from Wolverhampton but grew up in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales from the age of 12. I completed my degree and PhD at Cardiff University and moved back to Wolverhampton in January 2021
My passion for software programming comes from a degree module involving computation which sparked my interest. I find it addictive, dynamic and enjoy the challenge of developing my own skills and knowledge.
When I’m not at work I like to go to the gym. I also spend a lot of my time looking after koi carp of which I have around 40. I’m currently renovating the fishpond in my back garden.
Tell us about your previous roles?
For the last seven months I worked as a Structural Engineer for Arup, based in Solihull. I was responsible for the inspection of river locks and the design of new canoe portage platforms.
Before that I spent three years completed a PhD research project in developing new material models for concrete at Cardiff University. Previous to that I completed a civil engineering masters degree, also at Cardiff University.
What were your first impressions of Nant?
I like the family feel of the business. It’s not your traditional corporate environment. Everyone is willing to help and very approachable.
What do you hope to achieve in your role?
As Graduate Software Engineer I will be responsible for developing the existing scheduling software. This includes the client development and risk assessment programmes. I hope to ensure that these updates bring operational efficiencies to the business.
