It’s National Apprenticeship Week 2024 and we spoke to our very own data technician, Adam Dolphin to talk about his role, and the benefits of an apprenticeship with Nant.
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Data Tech, delivered through The Development Manager (TDM)
I joined Nant in March 2023 and hope to complete my apprenticeship March 2024. Previously I was self-employed and ran a number of businesses including a property maintenance company and a wholesale food business.
What made you choose the apprenticeship route:
I left school at 16 and didn’t go on to higher education. I have spent some of my working life running my own businesses but wanted to try something new. I wanted to gain a qualification so tried accountancy- this wasn’t for me so then decided to try data and was hooked from the start. From there I found TDM and attended their skills bootcamp in January 2023 and it was from there I was introduced to Nant.
Since then, I have taught myself to program using Python, interact with databases using structured query language (SQL) and visualise data in reports and dashboards using Power BI.
What does a typical day look like?
The simple answer is, there isn’t one! The majority of what I do is based on what data people need, then go from there. This could be producing reports or building dashboards based on our customers requirements. Day to day I make plans, gather information, and look at long term improvement plans.
What have you learned so far?
When I first joined the business, I had the opportunity to go out on site with an L8 engineer and risk assessor. This experience was great as it showed me what data the engineers are inputting which is integral to my role.
I’m on a great career path, the apprenticeship is the piece of the puzzle for me to progress.
What have been the benefits of an apprenticeship with Nant?
The people are key. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and easy to deal with- this applies to all levels of the business. It’s a good place to work with plenty of support.
When I was choosing a business to complete my apprenticeship with, Nant stuck out to me, I didn’t know a lot about them but had some experience of plumbing through my property maintenance business. They felt like the right business at the right time. I’m excited to be part of the journey they are on.
What do you hope to achieve long term/ where do you see yourself?
Long term I would like to stay at Nant, there is a ton of potential and I’d like be part of the team that helps them realise that. The potential is there it’s just waiting to be unlocked.
